dreamweaver [sterek, kidfic, shmoop/fluff]
This is for the lovely Nashi (lonewolfed) who prompted me with the following: “sterek storytime and by that i mean stiles telling their kid a goodnight story and incorporating real events from their past; derek lurks somewhere near to correct him.”
Derek awakens with a start at the sound of Laura crying, and he’s halfway out of bed and down the hall before his brain reaches full consciousness. A sense of danger and the urge to protect both surge through him, and he’s ready to tear the throat out of whatever made Laura scream bloody murder in the middle of the night. But when he reaches Laura, a sobbing mess of dark hair and fear, he relaxes. No intruder.
“I dreamed,” Laura whimpers, and Derek smoothly picks her up. She used to fit perfectly in the crook of his arm; now, her little legs extend beyond his elbow crook, white toes gleaming in the dimmed darkness of her bedroom. She shivers and the world shakes. Derek knows what it’s like to have nightmares, knows how the line reality and dreams can blur until you wake up one morning and you think your mother’s still alive.
“What the—hey,” Stiles says a little breathlessly from the doorway; he is silhouetted from the light of the hallway, and his face is still sleep soft and droopy. His curled fists slacken, just slightly, and Derek notes with a smirk that he’s not the only hyper vigilant parent in the house. “Laura, it’s totally past Derek’s bedtime. What’s going on?”
